Microsoft Accessibility Insights

My team in Microsoft also owned the design of Accessibility Insights, a tool that is used to scan for accessibility issues on desktop, web, and mobile applications. We ideated a new name, a new logo, and other brand materials, like the Ada cat. We redesigned tools for web and mobile and got the product ready to be open-sourced outside Microsoft.

Given the hard constraints for this tool (it had to be 100% accessible) we introduced the practice of Design Sprints to the team, so that we could quickly start in the right direction, thanks to the contributions of PMs and Devs in the team, who were accessibility experts.

We learned so much about designing accessible products with this project.

On the left is the design sprint for Accessibility Insights for mobile. We follow the Design Sprint 2.0 process, and we had fun and very productive time together. The entire team, design, PM and dev participated. We even made cookies with the Accessibility Insights logo for the occasion!

Beneath is the outcome of the sprint: Accessibility Insights for Mobile. After connecting, the emulator shows the app on the screen and the app lists all the accessibility problems found, with suggestions on how to fix them.

Sharing the same design system is the Accessibility Insights for web app, which offers a scan results report, summarizing  bugs and offering guidance on how to fix them.
